April 22: Ask. Seek. Dwell. Gaze. Inquire.

Something as perplexing and daunting as the time we’re in tests the foundation of our faith. Covid-19 shakes the status quo. We have to be ready to adapt quickly for our protection. It is exhausting and wearisome. We long for a break and return to some semblance of normalcy. We long to be in a safe place.

David, a man after God’s own heart, faced countless trials in his lifetime. He fled and hid from King Saul, who attempted to kill him at least 12 times due to extreme jealousy (1 Samuel 18-19).  This reminded me of how we are somewhat “fleeing,” too, dodging the Covid-19 “bullet.”

One of his many prayers during those distressing times may sound peculiar but full of wisdom.

“One thing have I asked the LORD, that I will seek after:

that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life,

to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and

to inquire in his temple”

Psalm 27:4 (ESV)

From the outset, David’s request had one object: God.  He did not ask for an army nor a shelter, victory nor justice. His desire was to be with God in his time of need. Why? Because of David’s familiarity with God, he was certain of God’s position and character. God was his light in the darkness, his rescuer, protector, a safe place (according to Psalm 27:1-3).

I have been given a unique chance to take stock of my life, and this psalm presented me with an opportunity to search my heart’s affections. David reminded me of a primary pursuit that will uphold my faith no matter what assails—to seek after God. Seeking God means unhurried time. It means waiting for His presence, consciously fixing (instead of mental coasting) or focusing of my mind’s attention and my heart’s affection on God. Learning to dwell and gaze upon the beauty of the Lord will result in a deep desire and an ever-increasing devotion to Him.

God is our safe place. How do we get there?

Ask. Seek. Dwell. Gaze. Inquire.

Almighty Father,

You are always with me

even when I am not aware.

Train me to be conscious of Your constant presence.

Set my mind and heart aright.

Remove obstacles—anything that is blocking my view of You.

I desire to revel in your presence and

gaze upon Your beauty

both now and forevermore.

Amen.

Shelter in Peace,

Caroline Roeschke
