GATHERING
THE GATHERING (WEEKLY THURSDAY SERVICE)
Our Quest Teams host a weekly Thursday night service called The Gathering. It’s designed to help followers of Jesus grow in their faith and to welcome those who are curious about Jesus and His teachings. We gather 48 out of 52 Thursdays each year—and you’re invited to join us at 7:00 PM.
Visiting for the First Time?
Parking: VBC Parking Lot, 7106 Johnson Dr., Pleasanton, CA. 94588
Entrance: Enter through the double doors and follow the signs marked “The Gathering →”
Arrival: Someone will be there to greet you, answer questions, or help you find a seat—no pressure at all.
Crowd: Depending on the time of year The Gathering can range in size from around 30 – 100 people. Most Gatherings in 2025 averaged around 50-60 people.
What Can You Expect on Most Thursdays?
7:00–7:15 PM: Chat, meet someone new, grab a snack, and find a seat. This is a relaxed time to settle in and prepare your mind and heart for the evening.
7:15–8:45 PM: While each Gathering is a little different, most evenings can include elements like: Worship through praise music, Teaching from the Bible, Q&A panels, Group discussion, Testimonies, Prayer, etc.
Note: Feel free to observe or participate as you feel comfortable.
Fun Nights: One Thursday per quarter is set aside as a Fun Night (game night, trivia, and more).
Post-Gatherings: Some Thursdays include an optional Post-Gathering for the late-night crew (9:00–10:00 PM). This might be an ice cream bar at the venue or going to a local restaurant.

SMALL GROUPS
(SUPPORT GROUPS, BIBLE STUDIES, CLASSES & WORKSHOPS)
We are committed to helping young adults connect in smaller group settings that meet throughout the week in homes, coffee shops, and at our church. These groups vary in focus and may include support and encouragement, Bible studies, character development, or The Five Arenas of the Christian Life.
Our young adult small groups run in defined rounds with clear start and end dates— On-Ramp and Off-Ramp periods. These rounds of groups follow the four seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall.
Number of Groups Available: Each round typically includes anywhere from 2 to 15 groups.
Group Size: Groups range from 4 to 25 people, with the average group consisting of 8–10 participants.
Group Demographics: We offer young adult men’s groups, women’s groups, and co-ed groups. We also partner with the larger VBC community and encourage young adults to join intergenerational groups.
In addition to small groups, our Quest Team hosts and offers various classes and workshops throughout the year.

GUIDANCE
(MENTORSHIP, DISCIPLESHIP & COUNSELING)
Our Quest Teams offer guidance to young adults through mentorship, discipleship training, life coaching, and counseling. While these forms of guidance often overlap in life, we use distinct definitions to clarify the primary focus of the time spent with the person you are meeting with.
How We Use These Terms in Our Ministry:
-
A Christian making themselves available in the life of another by offering access, support, encouragement, and coaching in personal life and Christian living.
Style / Format: “On the Go”
Mentoring is often caught rather than taught, happening naturally while doing life together. -
A Christian intentionally investing in another Christian’s life to help them love God, love people, grow in Christlikeness, and make other disciples.
Style / Format:“At the Table”
While discipleship includes many aspects of mentoring, a key distinction is intentional, set-apart time to sit down together, open the Bible, and learn from God’s Word. This includes: learning to interpret and apply the Bible, connect with God through prayer and worship, grow in meaningful relationships with other Christians, identify and grow in your gifts and abilities to serve, learning how to share your faith, and equipping others to disciple. We often use The Five Arenas of the Christian Life (see our resource PDFs below) as a helpful discipleship framework.
-
A Christian walking alongside someone to provide comfort, clarity, and counsel rooted in biblical principles and Scripture.
Style / Format: “On the Couch” (face-to-face, with appropriate boundaries, practices, and confidentiality)
Counseling may include assessment and referral, identifying root influences or patterns, resolving specific matters, walking through hardship, or healing from past wounds.
Life Coaching may involve assessment and referral, decision-making, developing new skills, identifying unhealthy trajectories, and creating a clear pathway toward personal or spiritual goals.
Next Steps
We encourage young adults to consider meeting with a mentor, discipler, or counselor for three months, followed by a time of reassessment.
